Your child and skiing: 5 tips for a successful start!
Published on 20/10/2023 - Written by Marie
Your child may have been excited by the prospect of a holiday in the snow from the moment you started planning your holiday, but they're just as excited about their first ski lesson.
Here are 5 tips to ensure that your child gets off to a successful start and has a memorable week with the instructors!
1/ Choosing the right ski course
From the age of 3, your budding adventurer can be introduced to the joys of skiing and snowboarding. To ensure that your child has an enriching and successful experience, it's important to offer lessons adapted to their age and beginner level.
The Piou-Piou club, run by Val Thorens' esf instructors, guarantees fun learning in a safe environment. Away from the big slopes, your child will discover a colourful and stimulating playground where they can learn about the mountain world and find their balance on skis in good spirits.

2/ The right equipment for their first ski lesson
When you enrol your child in a ski course, the instructors do not provide the equipment needed for the activity. You'll need to go to a rental shop beforehand to make sure your child has the following equipment on the big day:
- Skis that are suitable for their size and for discovering skiing.
- Ski boots that your child will feel comfortable in.
- A helmet that fits.
- A ski mask or sunglasses.
Please note that ski poles are not necessary at the Piou-Piou club.
Your child's clothing should also provide comfort and warmth throughout the day. We recommend that you choose lightweight, technical underwear (tights, long-sleeved T-shirts). Socks, gloves and neck warmers are also essential to complete the outfit.

3/ Protecting them from the sun
Although it can be cold on the slopes, it's important not to underestimate exposure to the sun in the mountains. The UV index is actually twice as high as on the beach, as the altitude means that the rays are less filtered.
To avoid sunburn and the risk of sunstroke for your apprentice skier, it's essential to apply SPF 50+ sun cream. In addition to their goggles or sunglasses, you'll be providing effective protection for a worry-free outdoor activity.

4/ Anticipate the time of their ski lesson
Unfamiliar with ski boots and winter clothing, your child will need some time to get used to these new sensations. As the time for their first ski lesson approaches, it's important to leave early to get to the meeting point.
Without rushing him or stressing him, you can arrive at the Montana nursery in Val Thorens in good spirits and on time. It's a simple but essential precaution that will help the activity run smoothly for everyone and contribute to your child's well-being, for a joyful first discovery of winter sports.

5/ Trust the esf instructors to look after your children
While it's tempting to watch your child and call out to them regularly during the lesson, your presence can also be a source of distraction and slow down their progress. The esf Val Thorens instructors are all experienced and trained in guiding younger children.
With friends their own age and a recognised teaching method, you can be sure that your child will have a great time, in complete safety. What's more, they'll be the first to want to show you their progress on the snow at the end of the lesson!

Your child's efforts will be rewarded at the end of the week with a medal ceremony, where parents and children can enjoy the festivities together.
