A stay at Val Thorens is the perfect opportunity to create some wonderful family memories. With its Family Plus label, the resort has all the services you need to welcome your little ones.

They can enjoy activities adapted to their age and level, from the nursery to the first runs with their parents, via the Piou-Piou Club. Wondering what outfit to choose for a successful first experience on the slopes? Here's our advice!

Essential technical clothing

With the cold and damp in the resorts, young and old alike are advised to wear the right clothing to cope with the weather all day long. The best clothing is specially designed for the winter season. Made from high-quality technical materials, they keep your child's body warm with excellent thermal insulation.

Long considered the star of the slopes, ski suits are now considered impractical and have been replaced by a jacket and trousers ensemble. Ideal for a quick and easy trip to the toilet! You can, however, keep the ski suit for little ones who are still wearing layers; that way you can be sure that the cold air won't penetrate!

Dressing for winter: the three-layer rule

Any winter sports enthusiast will tell you: to keep warm, you need to apply the three-layer rule! This involves layering different types of clothing to protect your apprentice skier from the cold as much as possible:

  • Firstly, a long-sleeved thermal top with a second-skin effect. Warm and breathable, it wicks away perspiration.
  • Then a jumper or fleece jacket. This insulating material forms a highly effective barrier against low temperatures.
  • Finally, a ski jacket to protect your child from the unpleasant effects of damp.

Under ski trousers, your toddler can also wear thermal leggings for optimum comfort and all-round protection.

Accessories to protect extremities

Toddlers and young children are particularly sensitive to the cold, especially on their extremities - feet, hands and ears. You can add accessories to your child's outfit to protect them right down to their fingertips.

While gloves provide better dexterity, mittens keep hands warmer. So mittens are best for the little ones! A hat is obviously essential to cover the head and ears. However, you can opt for extra protection such as an earmuff, especially on very cold days, and add a colourful, trendy scarf to complete the outfit.

Finally, don't forget ski socks, whether on the slopes or in the nursery! Thick and fluffy, they keep your child comfortable in their boots or snow shoes and limit rubbing. Their synthetic fibres help to wick away perspiration, while their high shafts provide good coverage from foot to calf.

These clothes and tips will ensure your child's well-being during their stay in Val Thorens. Now it's time to start shopping and packing!
