A fascinating and intense discipline, off-piste skiing is attracting more and more thrill-seekers.

Although the development of new equipment - such as wider skis - has made off-piste skiing more accessible in recent years, it's still essential to have a good level on the slopes, whether you're skiing with or without an instructor.

You also need to have an excellent knowledge of the mountains and the right equipment to guarantee your safety. Age, level required, equipment... We give you all the information you need to understand off-piste skiing and, perhaps, take the plunge!

Off-piste: safety first!

Before you start skiing or snowboarding off-piste, you need to know the essential safety rules. The mountains are full of surprises, and even the most experienced skiers can't tame them completely.

So it's essential to find out about the terrain you're about to explore beforehand, as well as checking avalanche bulletins, taking the weather forecast into account and being able to spot popular trails.

So much information that you need to acquire to ensure that your sessions are safe.

While on-piste experience will give you practice and a better understanding of mountain terrain, there are also special off-piste safety courses to help you spot dangers and react appropriately in the event of a problem.

At what level can you start off-piste?

To be able to start off-piste skiing in the best possible conditions, you need to have a solid command of on-piste skiing or snowboarding. It is recommended that you have a confirmed level, which means knowing how to control your speed, master turns and handle falls well.

Some ski schools offer courses accessible from class 3, meaning a red piste level, while others will require at least the ability to ski on a black piste with small turns.

Similarly, there is no specific age for starting to ski. If your 13, 14, 15 or 16 year-old teenager has solid experience and a good command of technique, enabling him or her to ski safely on red or black runs, then he or she is perfectly capable of considering off-piste skiing.

Off-piste itineraries are varied, so everyone can progress at their own pace on suitable terrain.

Go off-piste with an instructor

A fickle environment, the mountains can only be mastered by working alongside professionals. To get started off-piste in the best possible conditions, it's essential to take lessons with an experienced guide or instructor.

Their perfect knowledge of the terrain will enable you to find your way safely along snow-covered paths and help you build up your self-confidence.

Accompanied by an instructor, you'll be able to take full advantage of the joys of off-piste skiing and will be properly trained in safety rules and the use of rescue equipment (avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe, etc.).

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced off-piste skier , going off-piste with an experienced rider - guide or not - is essential to your safety!
