You love winter sports and want to take your baby on their first ski holiday? To make this stay as unforgettable as possible, you need to take a few precautions!

Equipment, altitude, protection, activities... The mountains are a whole new environment that requires organisation. So there are many criteria to consider if you want to make the most of this new adventure with your newborn baby.

We've put together a list of tips to help you take off with your family with peace of mind.

Wait for the right moment to take your baby away

Are you looking forward to your first family outing to the ski resort ? Although your baby can come with you on this trip to the heights, it's best to wait until he's one month old before setting off.

Before then, your newborn baby is still in the middle of the neonatal period, adapting to his new environment. So as not to disrupt their development, it's best to postpone your skiing holiday until they are two or three months old, if they are in good shape.

As for altitude, you can go up to 2000 m, as long as your little one has no heart or respiratory problems. Otherwise, medical advice is essential!

Pack a full first-aid kit!

With the altitude and the cold, it's not uncommon for your ears to become blocked, for a cold to break out or for an ear infection to appear, especially in babies and young children.

So, to leave with peace of mind, it's best to take a complete first-aid kit with you: paracetamol, bandages, disinfectant, physiological saline solution, etc.

A word of advice for the climb up to the ski resort: take regular breaks to allow your young child to suckle or eat. Swallowing will relieve the pressure in their ears.

Equip it properly to face the cold and the sun

Since they can't move around as much as adults or children, it's natural for babies to be more sensitive to low temperatures. So you'll need to dress your little one warmly so that he doesn't suffer from the cold, by protecting his back and tummy properly and keeping him dry.

It's best to go out between 11am and 3pm when it's less cold, and remember to cover their extremities properly - hands and feet - to avoid the risk of frostbite.

And although temperatures can drop rapidly, there's no shortage of sunshine in the mountains. The snow reflects UV rays very strongly, so it's essential to complete your baby's outfit with sun cream and suitable sunglasses.

And to make the most of your skiing holiday with your newborn, resorts with the Famille Plus label are the best option.

At Val Thorens, the Mini Club nursery offers fun activities for the little ones, as well as snow discovery sessions, to the delight of both children and parents, who can enjoy the slopes with peace of mind!
